High-Mileage Treatment: When It Matters
High-mileage treatment is made for engines that have already put in real work.
Many high-mileage products are aimed at vehicles at or above about 75,000 miles. That number is a practical starting point, not a hard rule for every engine. The best choice still depends on the vehicle, the oil viscosity and specification required by the manufacturer, current mileage, leaks, oil consumption, and how the vehicle is driven.
At Buffalo Quick Lube, we use a high-mileage additive treatment instead of limiting the service to one separate high-mileage oil. We choose this approach so the treatment can be paired with the oil type your vehicle calls for, whether that is synthetic blend, full synthetic, Dexos, or another required oil. The product we use is labeled as not altering viscosity, which helps keep the service matched to the correct oil requirement.
High-mileage treatments commonly focus on older-engine needs such as seals, gaskets, wear protection, and oil consumption. These products may be helpful when an older engine has small seepage, minor oil use between changes, or the normal wear that comes with higher mileage.
It is important to be realistic: a high-mileage treatment is not a repair for a mechanical problem, a major leak, or an engine that is burning oil heavily. It can be a smart maintenance option, but it should not replace proper diagnosis when something is wrong.
A good time to ask about high-mileage treatment is when your vehicle is approaching 75,000 miles, has recently passed that mark, or has started showing age-related signs like light seepage or increased oil use between changes.
